Ethos & Values

Knowing every child, nurturing potential

Gosfield is a family school where every child can themselves, is encouraged to discover their passion and is inspired to achieve more than they believed possible.

J.W.Turner, our founding Headmaster, who established Gosfield School here at Cut Hedge Park in 1929, was a visionary educator and a leading proponent of a holistic approach to education. An approach that marries an excellent academic education with developing the intellectual, cultural, moral, sporting and creative lives of each child. Our entire school community works together to ensure that this vision remains a reality in the day to day experience at Gosfield for every child.

As a community – Parents, Staff, Pupils and Governors – we have developed a list of the values and characteristics that underpin a Gosfield education and that we believe a Gosfield education instils in each of our students:

  • Kindness
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Community
  • Independence
  • Resilience
  • Integrity
  • Authenticity

These are the foundations which enable individuals to grow and develop in all aspects of their educational and pastoral lives. Gosfield is a small and caring setting where every individual’s contribution is counted and valued within a friendly and supportive ethos, where pupils and staff inspire one another, and in turn inspire others.

Kindness

The art of kindness involves harboring a spirit of helpfulness, being generous and considerate, and doing so without expecting anything in return.

Respect

Respect is when we accept someone as they are and for who they are. That means accepting them even when they are different from us in some way, or differ from us in opinion. Being respectful means, you care enough to think about how you impact others. At the heart of respect is caring.

Responsibility

Responsibility is being accountable for one’s actions and to know and follow various rules, laws, and conduct codes. Responsible citizens treat others fairly, are trustworthy, honor their commitments, and are environmentally aware.

Community

Finding others with the same values, interests, and world views makes us realise that we’re not alone and makes us feel valued. Being accepted into a group gives us a stronger sense of self and can help us cope with negative experiences and feelings

Independence

Independence is about thinking or acting for yourself and standing up for what you believe in.

Resilience

Resilience is the ability to adapt to difficult situations. When stress, adversity or trauma strikes, you still experience anger, grief and pain, but you’re able to keep functioning — both physically and psychologically. However, being able to reach out to others for support is a key part of being resilient.

Integrity

The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles that you refuse to change

Authenticity

Authenticity means you’re true to your own personality, values, and spirit, regardless of the pressure that you’re under to act otherwise. You’re honest with yourself and with others, and you take responsibility for your mistakes. Your values, ideals, and actions align.
