U13 Rugby - Stoke College 10 Gosfield 55

Thursday 23rd November

We took a very inexperienced, mainly Year Seven team, to Stoke School and came away handsome winners. The boys took a lot of confidence in a game where the Year 8 students were added extras! The majority of the boys made good yards with the ball in hand and they rucked and mauled their way down the pitch to score an impressive 9 tries!

George Bowers enjoyed a successful first outing at scrum half with some nifty footwork to score two opportunistic tries. Will Fairs was consistently strong in scoring 3 tries; aided confidently by Francis Ulrich, Farai Mutswungama and Rayan Sheikh who all carried the ball and put in some strong tackles in the midfield. The new look scrum also did a sterling job, with Tom Goodlad, scorer of one try, propping well helping Rayan who hooked for the first time and Charles Paget on the blindside. Harry Durrant was a force to be reckoned with and had a massive tackle count by the end of the game. Tom Askwith gave us good width on the wing and made some positive runs to take the ball into contact.

A big thank you goes out to Year 8 who were told right from the start they would be playing a supporting role this time. The way they worked with the Year 7 students was exemplary, communicating brilliantly with them to help with positioning and direction.

Overall the boys played brilliantly and in the end ran out 55-10 winners. Well done boys!

U13 Rugby - Gosfield 66 Cambridge International 14

Tuesday 14th November

Cambridge International brought a determined team to Gosfield but were outclassed by our under 15 team at Gosfield. Strong running from Ben McQuillan and a long run ending in a try by Alex Allen were particular highlights of a very one sided affair.

Gosfield led 45-0 at half time and even with our players performing in unfamiliar positions in the second half we still managed to add another three tries to finish the game 66-14 winners. A professional performance by the team.

Under 13s Rugby: Gosfield School 19 - 22 Colchester High School

This was a thoroughly entertaining game with some end to end rugby being played.  22 players from Gosfield were up for the game with a good number of Year 7s confident enough to step up for the challenge.

Colchester scored twice early on to take a 10-0 lead and from there the battle commenced. Ollie Barrett put us on the scoreboard and Ollie Ings put over the conversion to bring us back into contention.  Both teams rallied and scored another try a piece (Freddie Calvert scoring for Gosfield). With minutes to go Tom Swift struck another blow for Gosfield; and with another converted try we went  19-17 up.  Straight from a very short kick off the ball was collected by Colchester and their best runner went through a few tackles to score what turned out to be the winning try. Unfortunately for Gosfield it meant we lost 22-19.

All 22 boys got stuck in and should be proud of coming very close to beating what was a very good Colchester team.

Stoke College 0 - 102 Gosfield

22 boys went to Stoke College this Thursday and got a thoroughly deserved win. Convincing doesn’t go quite far enough; the boys were outstanding! Tom Swift started the try count off with a powerful run through over half the Stoke team.  Freddie Calvert then added the first of his 3 tries with a typical dancing run round the Stoke defensive line.  After that, the tries kept on coming, with most of the Year 8s and one of the Year 7s (William Fairs) getting on the score sheet.  As the game went on more and more Year 8s came off to give the 7s a chance of a long game. It didn't stop the scoring though with Gosfield ending up 102 - 0 winners! Of particular mention (apart from the many try scorers) was Tom Goodlad who had a great game at prop and who set up the last try with an outstanding offload in the tackle.

Stoke College 36 - 24 Gosfield School

The U15 team put up a fantastic performance but went down to a Stoke team with one outstanding runner.  It didn't start well, after 4 minutes we went 12 points down. Once the boys sorted out their defensive line we got into the game and Chris Crowley led the way with some bulldozing runs through the middle. Michael Freeman marshalled the back line and we also started to get some success there as well. Both teams scored at the same rate after that and the game ended 36 - 24 to Stoke. A shame we didn't get going quicker but for many parts of the game we dominated possession and territory; we just weren't able to defend out wide with the defence just being too narrow.  A competitive game against a team who only lost by 2 points to Finborough. Well done, lads!
