Why Study French or Spanish?

Languages should appeal to all students. AS Level in French or Spanish has been developed to inspire all students who have an appreciation of the language, literature, film and culture of the French / Spanish-speaking world. Students will follow a motivating course of study that will enable them to develop an advanced level knowledge and understanding of the French / Spanish language, the culture of Francophone or Hispanic countries, as well as practical and valuable language and transferable study skills. This course will help to prepare students for higher education and enhance their employability profile.

Assessment

There are 2 externally assessed papers testing listening, reading, writing and translation skills. There is also a speaking exam conducted by the class teacher.

Paper 1 – Listening, reading and Prose (Foreign language translation to English) (40% AS)

Paper 2 – Essay on film or novel, translation (English to Foreign Language) and grammar exercises (30% AS)

Paper 3 – Speaking exam (30% AS)
