Early Years Summer Term 2013

Our topic this term is ‘People Who Help Us’. We will be finding out about the important work of paramedics, the Police and firefighters as well as other jobs that help us enjoy life and keep safe. This theme continues after the half term break with a focus on the sea, based on the lighthouse keeper stories by Ronda and David Armitage. We will explore the important role of lighthouses in the past and how ships keep safe today. We will find out about the bravery of Grace Darling and her father.

To support children’s learning about people who help us in our local community, we will be visiting the fire station and fire fighters in Sible Hedingham. I also hope that visits from various people involved in the Emergency Services will take place but these are always subject to those involved not being called out at the last minute on an emergency. I will inform you of pending visitors prior to each visit.

On Thursday 13th June, to support our focus on the story of ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Cat’ we have a visitor from Wood Green Animal Shelter in Godmanchester coming to talk to the children about caring for animals. Again further details will follow nearer the time.

In Literacy, we will continue to reinforce Phase 3 letters and sounds as well as continuing to recognise more tricky words by sight. Writing tasks will include writing stories, letters and postcards, recipes as well as recording facts and ideas. All the children are now aware that sentences must start with a capital letter, end with a full stop and need clear finger spaces.

Our numeracy will focus on lots of different number activities to support our developing number skills. We recite numbers to 100 and will be working on recognising the numerals as well as counting in 1’s and 10’s and estimating how many. We will revisit addition, subtraction and tackle simple addition and subtraction problems involving money. We will also be sorting 2d shapes and describing 3d shapes (cube, cuboid, cylinder, sphere, cone and pyramid).

Topic related books and artefacts are welcomed in school for children to show but please do not let them bring in anything precious or easily breakable.

As in previous terms, we continue with the following:

Monday

PE with Mrs Ford (PE kits to be worn to school)

Whole School Assembly

Tuesday

Singing Assembly with Miss Page

Thursday

Star of the week Assembly

Music with Mrs Harrison

Friday

House Assemblies

Please continue to send in water bottles daily especially as the weather should be getting warmer. Children also need a sun hat in school. Gosfield school caps can be purchased and sun cream should be applied on sunny days. (P20 can be applied at home before school and will last the whole day.)

Miss Knowles is a student at the Colchester Institute and has been joining us on Thursdays and Fridays as part of her degree in Early Years Education. She is a qualified Swimming Instructor and has been a great help in the pool at Halstead Leisure Centre on Thursday afternoon, giving excellent 1-1 support with a swimming group. She is with us until June.

‘Fly on the Wall’ sessions continue. For those of you who have already spent part of a morning in the classroom, I am sure you will agree it is a good opportunity to see your child learning independently and effectively and interacting with others. If you have not arranged a session and would like to do so, please see me or Mrs Brown at the end of a school day.

As always, if you have any concerns, I am usually available at the end of a school day or feel free to arrange an appointment if there is something that needs to be discussed in more detail.
