Why study Physics at A- level?

Physicists strive to understand the physical world and to discover the laws, which govern its behaviour. Physics is a diverse subject that extends from cosmology and the processes which keep stars burning, through electronics and optical materials, to nuclear reactions and sub-atomic particles. This cutting edge science is helping to explore the distant reaches of the Universe, as well as discovering how it began.

Course Aims

The course provides students with practical and analytical skills that could be used in a variety of professions. Engineers and Technicians of all kinds need a sound background in Physics. Other less obvious careers include: Pharmacists, Health and Safety Officers, Yacht and Boat Designers, Speech Therapists, Information Scientists, Climatologists, Industrial Designers, Surgeons, Technical Writers and Soil Scientists.

Physics is often paired with Mathematics and Further Mathematics. It also fits well with Chemistry, Geography, Technology and Biology; the world of medical technology widely uses a combination of Physics and Biology and Marine Biology covers the study of Oceanography and the physical characteristics of the sea.

Course Outline

The AS-Level course comprises 4 modules:
1—Development of practical skills
2—Fundamental data analysis
3—Physics in action
4—Understanding processes
The A2-Level course comprises an additional 2 modules:
5— Rise & fall of the clockwork universe
6— Field & particle physics

Assessment at AS will consist of two examination papers at the end of the first year of study. Students may choose to take the A-Level assessment at the end of two years of study, which consists of three examination papers (with content from across all 6 modules) and a Practical Endorsement assessed throughout the course.
