Why Study English Literature?

This course builds on the skills acquired in GCSE English Literature, developing students’ understanding and appreciation of a range of texts and genres and honing their reading, writing, critical and analytical skills. It is very well regarded when applying to university and as the basis for careers such as publishing, law and marketing.

Course Content

Students study two drama texts, including a Shakespeare play, and critical responses to Shakespeare; two prose texts on a chosen theme, one of which is pre-1900; and two poetry collections, including post-2000 works, and unseen poetry analysis. Students also have a free choice of two texts from any genre to study for the coursework element of the course. 

Course Aims

This course enables students to read widely and independently set texts and others that they have selected for themselves engage critically and creatively with a substantial body of texts and ways of responding to them develop and apply their knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation explore the contexts of the texts they are reading and others’ interpretations of them undertake independent and sustained studies to deepen their appreciation and understanding of English literature, including its changing traditions.

Assessment

All examinations are taken at the end of Year 13

- Component 1: Drama. Written examination (open book-clean copies) 2hr 15 mins 30% total marks

- Component 2: Prose. Written examination (open book-clean copies) I hr 20% total marks

- Component 3: Poetry. Written examination (open book-clean copies and unseen poem) 2hr 15 mins 30% total marks

- Coursework: An extended comparative essay referring to two texts (2500-3000) 20% total marks
