Why study Chemistry at A- level?

Chemistry is the science of materials. Think of the world around you: plastics, drugs, fuels and fireworks. Chemistry is everywhere! If you are intrigued by experiments and want to know how the world works and how to change it, then Chemistry is for you. “Satisfaction of one's curiosity is one of the greatest sources of happiness in life.” Linus Pauling, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 1954.

Course Aims

The course provides students with practical and analytical skills that could be used in a variety of professions. Students who have studied Chemistry have followed careers in Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Agricultural Science, Biotechnology and Environmental Science. In fact, Chemistry keeps your options open for any Science based career. Studies in Chemistry combine well with Biology for Medical Careers and Geography and Biology for Agricultural or Environmental Sciences. Mathematics and Physics are also useful combinations.

Course Outline

The AS-Level course comprises 4 modules:
1—Development of practical skills
2—Foundations in Chemistry
3—Periodic Table & energy
4—Core organic chemistry
The A2-Level course comprises an additional 2 modules:
5— Physical chemistry & transition elements
6— Organic chemistry & analysis

Assessment at AS will consist of two examination papers at the end of the first year of study. Students may choose to take the A-Level assessment at the end of two years of study, which consists of three examination papers (with content from across all 6 modules) and a Practical
Endorsement assessed throughout the course.(stylistic, original or one of each), an Extended Set Works written exam (2 hours).
